Tangerine Skies
I visited my daughter and family in beautiful Boscastle, Cornwall, where one evening we were rewarded with the most lurid pink and orange skies. This abstract landscape painting seeks to capture those few moments before the sun sets behind the steep hills and turns the harbour to darkness. Ravishing colours and a brooding atmosphere, loosely painted, convey the energy and spirit that I felt at that moment.

Cornwall is full of wild and brooding places, tiny coves, caves, cliffs and secret beaches, that are a paradise for anyone with a love of beauty. To capture the luminosity of the sky on one particular evening, I started out by painting the entire background a neon pink. Layers and layers of loose colour were then added to give a rich depth without losing the spontaneity. Painting on wooden panels means I can scrape, scratch and add marks with impunity. I loved scratching back to that first vibrant pink layer - to discover a little shock of something old, something unexpected, something wild! Pretty much the same feeling I experienced whilst I stayed in Boscastle.
