MA'S BIG VASE
This vase was always full or red carnations, Gwen's favourite flowers and I will always think of her each time I see it. In reality, it’s a blue and white patterned vase and I have painted it more realistically in the past, but for this series I’m more interested in capturing the ‘shape’ of my favourite vessels, rather than the design. I love the voluptuous curves and the way it tapers down to an elegant narrow base.
ACRYLIC/COLLAGE ON PAPER/PANEL
Set in a white frame, it measures 43.5 x 43.5cm (unframed art measures 36 x 36cm)

Painted on a blue and grey abstract ground, a nod to the vase’s true colour, I layered collage, inks, oil pastels and acrylics intuitively to create a richly textured ground. This allows the punchy shape to really pop. I love adding surprises too - so look closely, and you’ll see a pheasant reflected in the shine of the vase. Supremely elegant and slightly silly birds, you can’t help but love them.
