NETWORK OF LIFE 1
This is one of three small paintings in a new series that explore nature and my fascination with the soil’s microbiome. Nature has always inspired artists through the ages and I’m definitely transported whenever I’m out in my garden or walking the beautiful countryside where I live. With my camera on hand to capture special moments ‘above’ ground - how do I portray all that we CANNOT see, below ground - where the magic happens!

These little paintings started out as ‘playgrounds’ - just random colours applied in big sweeps of paint, lines of ink and charcoal mark-making on paper. Many of my paintings start out that way. They’ll sit on my shelves staring at me until an idea forms and I can put them to work. At which point, most if not all of what was originally there gets covered up with subsequent layers. The beauty is when I scratch through or scrape the new wet paint away in places, and reveal a shock of pink, a streak of orange, or a vibrant blue patch peeking through.
