It starts with some music, a wash of my favourite colour of the moment, and a sweeping mark of charcoal. No idea where it’s going, but trusting the process. This is the way I like to start a painting, with each mark informing the next. Sometimes, as with this piece, it will stump me for a while. So I leave it to one side, stare at it occasionally, turn it around, flip it upside down, and at some point it speaks to me - and that’s the moment I love!
